Summary

Users could choose to see advertisements on a alternative starting page, this money could support the whole project.

Proposal

If users want, they could enter wikipedia via an alternative entrance page (e.g. adenter.wikipedia.org) and see advertisements only on this starting page. Everything else is linked to the normal add free wikipedia pages.

Alternatively: Users could download a Cookie that allows wikipedia to open an advertisement popup with the starting page.

Motivation

Easy but not obligatory way to support wikipedia financially. No ads directly beside the volunteered work of others (=articles).

Key Questions

Should it be a subdomain of wikipedia.org so people know that the money really reaches the project?

How many people are there that will actually want to view advertisements?

Will this discourage people from donating?

When we discussed advertising in 2002 most of our Spanish editors left and set up en:Enciclopedia Libre Universal en Español. If an advertising proposal was being seriously considered how would we avoid a similar exodus of editors?
