Proposal talk:Getting more information

The board of the foundation might have a problem to know what is happening in small wikipedias and if there are problems. The board might find that for x readers of the main page there should be y active editors. If there are not, that could show the board that there is a problem. Maybe it´s a political problem (fear about participation), trouble within the local community, there is no localization, problems with the characters, etc. Also, if there was a strong increase in the number of readers that might show that the local wikipedia was mentioned in the local media and the number of editors will soon increase too. And of course money. If a wikipedia has x readers there might be y donations. If not, maybe there is a problem that the foundation could fix. fear about participation: Imagine you live in a country with a strong security police, is it save to edit articles? For example, in the zh-WP there are for sure some admins working for the government. Is this a security problem for editors? stats.wikimedia.org

It seems that stats.wikimedia.org provide better data. For example, strong growing (in terms of number of viewers) Wikipedias are ru (Russian) (+120%) and hi (Hindi) (+55%). The strongest growing wikpedia is the sah:wp (+771%). I looked into wp en:Sakha language, people speaking this language are living in the northern Asian part of Russia. If you look into the number of new editors you will find one or two new editors per month. saw:wp has 4620 articles. I looked into the logs and found that 3 editors are the main editors. The last article that one of them edited looks very good. It has 4000 characters and a picture. Than I looked into stats.grok.se. The articles that are viewed most are: Internet, Encyclopedia, email, WWW, Russia, Asia.

The biggest and fastest growing wp is the Russian WP. They have 400.000 articles and more than 900 new editors in June. The articles that are viewed most Source are en:Sayano–Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station (On 17 August 2009 there was an accident), Russia and en:Odnoklassniki (a social network service for classmates and old friends reunion popular in Russia). I don´t know if the Russian WP has any problems where foundation is able to help. Since May 2008 there is a chapter, therefor it´s easy to ask.

The hindi wp has 35.000 articles and got about 10 new Wikipedians per month. They have 25 editors with more than 100 edits. The articles that are viewed most are: Hindi, India, the featured article en:Munshi Premchand (a writer of modern Hindi and Urdu literature), Ghandi and Independence Day (India). An Indian Chapter is planned (meta:Wikimedia_India) Since Sue Gardner and Jimmy Wales visited India in Dec 2008, I´m sure they know if foundation is able to help.

After looking into these facts, I wonder if there is a way to help small wikipedias to grow faster. I could have bet which articles readers view most. Maybe it would be a help if the editors would know. --Goldzahn 08:09, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
