Summary

I think that Wikimedia should focus its projects as platforms and data sources, not as portals. Obviously, Wikipedia and Wiktionary and the like are already public facing and should remain that way. But, what about increased third party developer support and thinking of the Wikimedia projects as data sources and not just as a "website".

I'd love to see myriad application and sites using the information collected and maintained by Wikimedia and allowing that to be an open and seamless process.

Proposal

Massive API improvements. Wiktionary needs to be structured so other applications can parse the information. Spend time educating developers and supporting the creation of multi-language toolsets for accessing the information.

Motivation

The one face of Wikimedia right now is Mediawiki. Let's expand on that. We can't keep one face for the rest of time. And after all, its all about data.

Key Questions

  • Where do we go from here?
  • What are the limitations of a single platform?

Potential Costs

  • Sending around developers to talk at conferences about this
