Summary

Wikinews has in the past made a number of efforts to maintain and provide current weather data as such qualifies as news. Retaining a history of such records can also be considered part of the Wikinews and Wikipedia remits - the more historical data is stored, available, and searchable, the more valuable it will be.

Milos Rancic has developed a system to collate publicly available weather data using software agents and store it in a wiki - but this is really a highly inappropriate form to store the data in, and the technique being employed would require at least one software agent (robot) per country to be covered.

Proposal

It is proposed that some self-contained weather data collating system be developed and integrated to MediaWiki. If linked to Geolocation of articles then this can be of use anywhere that a page can be given clear geographic coordinates - for example, a city.

Key Questions

Potential Costs

  • Developer time to design database structure and interface to MediaWiki
  • Development of collection agent to populate database
