Search prioritising reliable information

Most search engines continue to provide spam, advertising and ephemeral information side-by-side with factual information sites. There is an urgent need to give priority to reliable information resources which can be used both by the educational community and general-purpose users.

A year or so ago, it looked as if Wikimedia Search was going in this direction but it does not yet seem to have made the mark. It might be interesting to develop software which could contribute to the reliability of websites picked up by a search engine, much in the way Yahoo, for example, is able to distinguish emails concerned with span from those carrying genuine messages. User participation here would be very useful. Ipigott 19:44, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
