Summary:Talk:Strategic Plan/Movement Priorities/diversity
The current state of participation:
- The male-female ratio is too skewed
- Would like stats for ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status
- The "consensus" process flies by too quickly for all those except those deeply involved to participate
- We're introducing bias into our decision-making processes by designing them for high-volume contributors. Decision-making should not be framed by the person with the most free time.
- Rash and rude judgments are a major deterrent to participation, especially to women and the elderly
Possible solutions:
- Different groups of people have different amounts of time they can contribute. Data on how these groups spend their time could help us understand how much time they can contribute.
- Need to make low-commitment tasks and make it clear what those are
- Need to distinguish newbies from others and protect their articles from deletion.
- Need to distinguish between flagrant and unknowing policy violations, and politely explains things for the latter.
- How can we make Wikipedia a higher priority for people?
