From Strategic Planning

some thoughts

  • delivering v. sharing knowledge  : our mission is about empowering people. 'delivering' knowledge from the fonts of wisdom that generate it doesn't quite capture the spirit of projects that anyone can edit! and converting talented readers into editors remains one of our core weaknesses... I changed this to 'sharing knowledge' (but even better would be some catchy phrases about teaching one another and learning from one another, which many people can relate to).
  • making donations, contributing, and supporting in other ways. We need a much better way to describe this, and to ask for contributions of all kinds. It sometimes sounds as though we are anxious about asking for money (which we need not be) and shy about asking for other contributions (avoiding getting into too much detail with 'of course' or 'other ways') even though many talented future contributors don't realize their input / skills are wanted.
How is this:
If you cannot participate, please consider making a donation to support this critical project. A financial donation will support our planning work and our global free knowledge programs. We also need volunteers who can contribute knowledge to our projects [link], improve our software and infrastructure [link!], and support our work in their communities [link].

selection, task forces and empowerment

  • We will soon contact individuals selected for a task force. - how about modifying this to something like "we will soon contact those who are interested in joining a task force with invitations." (since even those who are not invited to join as a core member of one of the main task forces should be invited to participate in other ways, however we describe that) This also avoids the cognitive dissonance between saying "we will select a few people" and "please form your own task forces too!". I don't see why self-selected TFs should be treated any differently from the core TFs which we are actively facilitating and want to make sure happen. Sj 14:28, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How can I edit http://volunteer.wikimedia.org? Page has mistakes in translation (Polish, Czech) of red button and it's complete nonsense. It looks that someone forget about button and used Google Translator ;/ Leinad 09:36, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

user:Tgr added a "Button" entry for the "Volunteer now" text that has not been translated or has been done badly. Please, Whoever coordinates the translations, please pass this request. Whoever copies the text to the final destination have this in mind. Marianocecowski 15:28, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal letter - lt

Lt appeal letter has been marked as published, however at Lithuanian wiki it is in the wrong language - not Lithuanian. ~ Mea

Wikiversity is American and has too many idioms to translate

Some of the articles in Wikiversity are totally impenetrable to speakers of other languages. I was born in England and grew up watching American television programmes but I cannot help our translators sometimes because the language used is so idiomatic. I am passionate about extending knowledge —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.45.36.34 (talkcontribs)
