Barriers to growth

It would be great to get some input from people who are editors of Southeast Asian language wikipedias on what they perceive to be the barriers to growth. Sarah476 20:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Active users? ID only have 50 active users that edits 125+. And growing numbers of Islamic School, they are learning arab too as opt to EN. (ID contributors)

Internet penetration

You should consider internet penetration through mobile phones which raise drastically in urban (Indonesian large cities) comparing to landline. look at facebook number. It potential reader but not contributor but vice versa, readers won't read if content from not so much contributor don't have significant quality. (ID contributors)

We did. :) Check out Mobile reach. ~Philippe (WMF) 06:53, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Phillippe, shouldn't you be asleep right now? So, the 11-21% of the population is including mobile users? how many percentage is mobile and how many is not? you do realize that reader (at least in ID) will not contribute to more article growth? and they will not read it if the quality is bad or the article didn't exist? being free and suck is not the same thing as being free and good, and you need more contributors to do the second. (ID contributors)

I absolutely should be asleep right now :) In the interest of that, I'm going to defer the second part of your question to tomorrow, if that's okay... it may be over the weekend, but I'll dig and make sure that I really know the answer before telling you. ~Philippe (WMF) 07:16, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Feel free to do what you think is best. However, I think the best strategy you have for Indonesia right now (or any SEA countries) is to come, visit, and meet the people and resolve what 5 years worth of information go back and forth in wiki and finish it in 3 days. Beside it is kinda offensive planning something in our area without telling the people. You do want it to be backed up in the country you are talking about, no? You might check out Sue's letter to the Board, which suggests a very similar plan. :) ~Philippe (WMF) 07:32, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, the link doesn't work. Quite surprise to see no social marketing involved in here. Shouldn't you be more investing in people too, bside technology? And please do keep the people who travel and see us on board, and not quitting after 6 months ;-) (ID contributors)

I fixed the link. If you check out Strategic_Plan_2010-2015/Priorities#Implications_for_the_Foundation you'll see that we predict a need for investment in people. Just out of curiosity, what roles would you have them fill? I have my opinions, but curious aobut yours... ~Philippe (WMF) 09:07, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Eh? Predict? It's not priority? * help us God * As for roles, I don't think I get the question. "them" who? WMF? Chapters? Or volunteers in general? Anyway, am reading these strategies and yet get more confuse than before I read them. I'm done here, I'll share my view with Leo (ID) and tell him that I spoke with you. Cheers Phillipe (ID contributors)
