"Earned income" is non-profit jargon for business development revenue. In the case of the Wikimedia Foundation, most of our revenue is from donations, but about 10% is "earned income." It comes from mission-friendly business deals -- e.g., we get a small amount of revenue from the books sold by PediaPress; we make money from the Orange deal (Orange has licensed our trademark to use in its mobile version of Wikipedia); etc etc. There's more info here http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/2009-2010_Annual_Plan_Questions_and_Answers and here http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/2008-2009_Financial_Statements_Questions_and_Answers

I copied this information onto the page, Earned income. I also added the links to the Wikimedia Foundation page.
