Summary
Proposal
[stats.grok.se] (number of readers of the main page), [stats.wikimedia.org] and the logs within wikipedia might show the foundation which wiki is getting the biggest increase per cent of new viewers and editors. And of course there is the opposite. By looking into the numbers the foundation could detect problems and possibilities. There could be even a deeper research into the problem by using m:Wikimedia Embassy for communication between the foundation and the local wikipedias, if there is no chapter.
We could activate and restructure meta:Wikimedia Research Network and merge it with Wikistats ([stats.wikimedia.org]).
Motivation
I´m sure it is not easy to know which project (wikipedia, wikinews, etc) and which language version should get some help. For example, to show the editors the toolserver, the mailing lists and commons. Maybe they need information about localizing mediawiki and foundation could e.g. show which statistical effect varying welcoming-templates have on new contributors (e.g. time between login and first edit). And I think a statistical review of the structure of the help-pages could give some valuable insights.
Key Questions
Where should the foundation put some resources into?
Potential Costs
I don´t know.
