Chapters as way to reach under-represented groups

Chapters have the potential to offer a different type of participation that may draw in groups of people that are currently under-represented now. Perhaps females and older people will increase there participation after face to face contact with other people.

Does any one know if there is any data on the demographic break down of people that join Chapters now? FloNight♥♥♥ 18:05, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

I don't think the source of diversity would necessarily be the chapter membership itself (at least not initially), but I have seen a really far better turnout of under-represented groups in chapter outreach events to the general public (where, for example, the sex ratio among the non-Wikimedians we draw in tends to be 50:50).--Pharos 17:28, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for the follow up reply. I wonder if we could get hard data to support your observations. Are sign in sheets kept? I don't care who the exact people are, but maybe it would be possible to determine gender by names. FloNight♥♥♥ 10:28, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
