Clay Shirky on the tension between usability and protecting the core community

I think hiding advanced functionality is ok so long as there's a findable path *to* that knowledge once someone is experienced. Maybe even to the extent of a bot pointing them to it on their talk page once they've hit a certain volume of edits or something.
