Volunteer Council

From Strategic Planning

The Volunteer Council is a proposal made by Lodewijk that, as originally elaborated at meta:Wikicouncil/Resolution, would "serve as a valuable complement to the Staff, Advisory Board and Board of Trustees", and include:

  • Offering advice and support on issues relevant to the Wikimedia Volunteers,
  • Recommanding the opening or closure of Wikimedia projects,
  • Approving changes to the articles of incorporation or bylaws of the Wikimedia Foundation and
  • Assist in establishing a clear separation between the legal responsibilities of the Wikimedia Foundation as an Internet Service Provider and the community decisions for the Wikimedia Projects.

Some of these provisions were specific to the original formulation, and might not apply to continued efforts.

Sue has revived this idea of adding an additional structure to the Wikimedia movement as Question: should we recommend establishment of a Volunteer Council as part of the Movement Roles Task Force, and it is discussed further at the Additional Structures Rough Work page.
