How about "Proposal of the day", like the "article of the day" that many wikipedias have? Anyone want to create a system for that? (And before Pheobe asks... yes, I linked it to the to-do list, and yes, the to-do list has a nice new home on the redesigned main page that will deploy today if I get my act together... working from the Wikimedia office provides more distractions than working from my home office...)
I added a simple Proposal of the day on Template:Participate, wich will be in the new main page. This is a simple list of 31 proposals, on for each day of the monthy. I added a few random proposals for the next few days.
While I appreciate your efforts, I am a fan of random stuff though. Dont we want to make the proposals shown on main page randomly selected? The best would be of course selection from whole "Proposal:" namespace, or it could be limited to "selected" proposals somehow... I have no idea how this could be technically possible though.
I dont like "something of the day" templates as they are limited, random selecting from more than 31 options is always better.
I'd actually rather not do random: my strong preference is for a studied, deliberate effort to elevate proposals that some subset of contributors (self-selected) chooses to highlight. However, I bow to the community on this one - whatever people decide to do (engaging on that talk page, please) I will support.
Have you considered using DynamicPageList to build lists of things? For example, the most recently edited proposals for each primary project? Or any other intersection of categories you can think of.
Could be a good idea, and every day a new category, or intersection. DynamicPageList is not installed. Can this be arranged?
Random selection from all proposals might really be too much. A good compromise could be making the 31 selected proposals display randomly.
Agree, randomly going through all the proposals will certainly give low quality proposals and some proposals which have basically been rejected. The only problem is that MediaWiki does not really have a "random" template. All I know of is Special:Random or, with namespace, Special:Random/Proposal. That page can, however, AFAIK not be included. Regards,
Maybe we could use a copy of Template:Random portal component.
We can make a list of a number of proposals (100?) and randomly select one of them. This can easily be changed on the Template:POTD.
