Impact?
Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 01:13, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
- This is an old proposal that does not give results, not promote anything in the movement Wikimedia and goes against the objectives thereof. It has been widely discussed and denied by the community. Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton 19:45, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
That's been discussed over and over

- The portuguese spoken on Brasil is a bit different from the original Portugal lamguage. However both countries spoken the same language, it could be made a version for brazilian speaks once we have it on english too (see Simple English) -- Proposal
- Simple English Wikipedia is not focused on regional differences as this proposed Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia. American English, British English, Australian English, etc. convive very well at English Wikipedia. Why can't Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese do the same at the Portuguese version? Bisbis 19:42, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
The difference between pt and pt-br is large, unlike all varioatoisn of english. For us editors is easy because we get along with one another and we can clear our doubts just asking. But the readers won't do this. And there is the difference of pontuation, capital and tiny letter, words with different meanings and etc. Mizunoryu 02:26, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
I think that this issue is not relevant as the 1991 Ortographic Agreement that bring together the rules between both versions of portuguese has already been approved in the Portuguese Parliament and are going to begin implementation as soon as possible. Therefore, separation in two distinct wikipedias is pure duplication and waste of time. Celso Figueira 213.138.235.240 19:21, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Are 1361 words that the two versions the Portuguese (BR and PT) is different, or more. The Portuguese of Brazil is very very very very different that the Portuguese of Portugal (may believe it is good believe tie). Eduardo Rivelli 22:24, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Will be very good when I have a Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia. It will be very good both for Brazil and for Portugal (The Brazilians will enjoy, seeing things only in Brazilian Portuguese on Wikipedia in Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese will "fight" with less Brazilians (they will be in the Wikipedia in Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese will be in Wikipedia in the Wikipedia in Portuguese or European Portuguese. The Portuguese will stay in the Wikipedia in Portuguese with its former colonies, except Brazil (because the Portuguese of Brazil is very different from that of Portugal and former colonies, can believe that). (the number of Brazilians is higher than the Portuguese in the world). The Portuguese of Brazil is very different to the Portuguese of Portugal, Angola and other former Portuguese colonies. The list above is rather short. A language specific project works as long as there is a large group working in it. Avoid the balcanization of the Portugese speaking community and try on-the-fly translation like it is done at the Chinese Wikipedia (zh, zh-hans, zh-hant, zh-cn, zh-hk, zh-sg, zh-tw) or at the Serbian Wikipedia (Latin/Cyrillic alphabet). --32X 14:13, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

You do not know how the Portuguese of Brazil is different to that of Portugal (it is very different). You do not know, but I know same. It is many different words, accents and local expressions. The Portuguese in Brazil can be more different to that of Portugal than the American English and British English. Eduardo Rivelli 17:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Portuguese and Brazilians cannot live well in the Wikipedia in Portuguese. Eduardo Rivelli 17:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

If there is a Wikipedia in Arabic in Egypt, why can not exist in the Wikipedia Brazilian Portuguese. In pt-wiki has many conflicts because of differences language between Brazil and Portugal. 189.4.199.10 17:13, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I want peace, without conflicts. Very easy to say that the case is difficult. Eduardo Rivelli 17:44, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
If you think of this topic more globally you'll find many nations that speak a given language differently than others. The difference between Brazilian Portuguese and the one spoken in Portugal is most likely not the largest one. If you split the portuguese wikipedia in two you'll propably have to split many other wikipedias in several parts. German for example is spoken in 7 different countries - all of them having more or less different grammar, accents, words etc. (7.000 Austrian-German words alone) The german wikipedia has as well many conflicts regarding the language - nevertheless it would be fatal to split it. In the long run it would reduce the quality of wikipedia and IMHO propably lead to the end of wikipedia. --Sebastian.Dietrich 15:22, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
If there is a Coca-Cola Brazil, Google Brazil, Yahoo! Answers Brazil, etc., because it can not exist in the wikipédia en Brazil? Is asking too? Eduardo Rivelli 23:53, 21 August 2009 (UTC) You can create Wikipedias to other countries, not have so much trouble. Eduardo Rivelli 23:53, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
Even with the new ortographic agreement which makes the brazilian portuguese closer to the portuguese one, both languages are very different, they should YES make a new one. We feel reading the portuguese wiki as a british does reading the english one. Even being the same language, the wiki is far more focused on Portugal's portuguese, as is the english one with american english. Luizmarcelino01 16:37, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Bad Idea
This proposal makes me angry, this is a really bad idea, I think you don't understand the philosophy of Wikimedia. We should work together to improve wikipedia content, not split in half and start working separately. We will have twice the work we have right now. Everybody in Brazil can understand pt-pt. Some people might not like, but YES! we can understand. This proposal seems like those stupid youtube wars among brazilians and Portuguese people.

I don't quite understand those that oppose. They mostly seem concerned with the consequences for the Portuguese Wikipedia or for Wikipedias in other languages. All their arguments are pure speculation, without any proof. It's just a matter of their opinion. They mostly seem to be afraid of the future, of change, experimenting, of the unknown. Are they also afraid of losing control over the present Portuguese Wikipedia? Are they afraid of the possible competition? Those in favor who have edit as IPs seem to have some fear of identifying themselves. No surprise there. The argument that Brazilians speak a dialect of Portuguese and not a different language is just as artificial as the Tordesillas meridian. Move it to the right and let the Brazilians call their language whatever they want. If they want to call it Portuguese why should that bother anybody? I'm not particularly in favor of this idea, but why not let those that want to run a Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia give it a try? The Portuguese Wikipedia should not budge from its policies of catering to all speakers of the Portuguese language. Establish some performance measures. Let things run for a while. Keep track of those measures and see how things evolve. Who would rather have one Wikipedia, if it's possible to have two? All is well and dandy? Fine. Something is going awfully wrong? How long does it take to close a Wikipedia?
Brazilians have their own country. They have their own army and navy. Let all those that would like to edit there, Brazilians or not, and their readers, also have their own Wikipedia.
Sincerely,
Virgilio A. P. Machado
Virgilio neatly summarises all the reasons why I oppose this division.
I do not want any wikipedia to be a national wikipedia. I want every wikipedia to represent a diverse range of opinions, each given due weight.
To create a wikipedia in a minority language to preserve a rich old tradition is one thing. To fork a wikipedia in order to foment division is a bad idea.
Look at that list of words. Most are foreign imports with no particularily deep roots in either pt or br. Preserving these differences is not preserving any ancient culture.
and, by the way, I'm still not clear why Indonesian and Malay have separate wikipedias and I think they should consider unification.
Let me make it perfectly clear that I will never be active in the creation of a Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia. We pretty much already have one. It's called Portuguese Wikipedia where the vast majority of Brazilian editors tolerate the much smaller number of Portuguese, and some are extremely annoyed by their presence.
Who cares about what you or I want? I thought this was about presenting arguments based on fact or raise some questions who need an objective answer, not individual opinions. If you believe that there should not be national wikipedias I strongly advise you to start talking to the Checks and Slovacs, Polish and Silesians, Serbs, Croats, Bosnians and Montenegrins, Bulgarians and Macedonians. If you come out of those discussions alive, come back and let us know the results.
You are absolutely right. Brazilian Portuguese is not a minority language. It's a group of Portuguese dialects of a very large majority: the Brazilians. It is also a rich old tradition of about 300 years or about as old as the US. Please go tell the Americans that they don't have a rich old tradition. Again, if you come out of that discussion alive, come back and let us know the result.
I still don't understand those that oppose. What exactly is "to fork a wikipedia". Who would forbid any Portuguese speaker of any dialect, Brazilian or not from editing on both Wikipedias. What kind of "foment division" are we talking about here? They would just have to respect the regulations of each one, which might be slightly different. Knowing how the Portuguese Wikipedia policies and regulations are like and how they are administered, I would probably consider suicidal to get within a mile from a Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia. But, hey! I'm not the one proposing it. I haven't even signed on this proposal. Heck! Nobody has. Not even those that proposed it. So... What, me worry?
What list of words? The one some guy decided to spill out here, twice, as if once was not enough? What credibility has that? Is it verifiable? Do you see any reliable sources there? That's just one person's list. Leave it at that. I know some which are much more funny. You can find them too, if you search the Web and know Portuguese, of course.
Last but not least (I just love this expression, glad to have a chance to use it) what does Indonesian and Malay have to do with the proposal of a Brazilian Portuguese Wikipedia? Why don't you take a look at Proposal:More multi dialect wikis. Is that what you had in mind? Glad to be of service.
Take good care of yourself.
Sincerely,
Virgílio A. P. Machado
I am a native English speaker who also speaks Portuguese fluently and has lived in Brazil for a considerable period of time (about two years) and has come to not just know the culture but embrace it and love it. I think I do have some credibility here at least so far as to make an opinion on this topic.
For those who are dismissing the comparison between British, Australian, and American English to the comparison between Brazilian and "European" Portuguese, I'd have to say from my personal experience that the similarities between the two major dialects of the Portuguese language are actually much closer together than is found with the various dialects of English. Even dialectical differences within America are quite substantial, where arguably Boston, New York, Texas, "Dixie", Missouri, and California could all be considered to have very distinctive dialects for that matter.
Where does this end? Is there going to be separate Wikipedias for Paulistas and Cariocas? By the sounds of the discussion here, that is exactly where this sort of discussion will end up. Even there, where does the Balkanization end?
Some civility needs to happen in terms of dialectical differences when that happens in editing articles. I, too, get frustrated when writing on the English Wikipedia when folks from the UK are editing with their own grammar styles and spelling. Generally, however, I tend to treat any contribution made in that manner as an edit in good faith and don't bother with any sort of spelling standardization as long as it is the correct word and that the context can be understood. The difference is more than just spelling, as it also involves punctuation differences and even phrasing. Some of that is quite subtle but noticeable to a native English speaker.
That is the point, that the basics of good Wikipedia and indeed general wiki etiquette need to be encouraged. Assuming good faith, avoiding edit wars, and maintaining a "neutral point of view" even in regards to dialectical differences is quite important.
At least Portugal and Brazil use a common script and aren't fighting with each other as the fight between Romania and Moldovia keeps bringing up nationalistic issues and they are working with different alphabets for writing the same words. It could be worse. This does sound like an attempt to push a Brazilian POV into Wikipedia, at least into the Portuguese language side of things.
