Summary

Consider possible uses for the Ethics Search Protocol (ESP) for Internet Search Engines. (Overview)

Proposal

I am not bothered by the fact that I am unknown. I am bothered when I do not know others.

The ESP draft has several possible uses for Wikimedia projects:

  1. A dedicated project to support the development of ESP policies could be launched.
  2. The categorization namespaces used in ESP can be used for semantic web projects (Proposal talk:Semantic wiki-web).

Motivation

On the divine command theory, to say that God[1] is morally good is to say no more than that He says He is.[2]

—The Philosophy Gym: 25 Short Adventures in Thinking
(ISBN 0312314523), Stephen Law

[1] possibly used as a metaphor for government or management in relation to self-certification
[2] which is a self-certification

  1. The development of ESP policies has a very strong relation to education because ESP is intended to be useful for secondary education and both development and use of ESP policies by adults is expected to be educational and to motivate demand for further education (in the sense of lifelong learning).
  2. Semantic web: See Proposal:Semantic wiki-web

Key Questions

Member States and the Commission are to encourage the drawing-up of codes of conduct; this is not to impair the voluntary nature of such codes and the possibility for interested parties of deciding freely whether to adhere to such codes.

Directive 2000/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council

  • Should an ESP wiki offer a platform for cooperation of different interest groups (e.g. development of common policies and policy schemes)?
  • How should an ESP wiki support other communities?
    • Evaluate policies?
    • Develop policies?
    • Evaluate certifications?
    • Develop community requirements?
  • Should an ESP wiki document production standards, labor standards and standards for corporate social responsibility?
  • Should an ESP wiki document product standards?
  • Should an ESP wiki develop a curriculum for use in secondary education?
  • Should an ESP wiki offer an employment exchange (job search engine)?
  • What are possible relations to the Theseus research project (in English)?

Potential Costs

  • One might have to hire a few researchers or to cooperate with interested universities.
