Proposal talk:Navigation between the different projects

From Strategic Planning
Latest comment: 15 years ago by John Vandenberg

I think that many people are not even aware of the projects outside of Wikipedia. Combining these family of projects with a common navigation may be one approach as mocked up in this post Mathewsanders 03:32, 2 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

That mockup is fantastic! But where is Wikisource in the picture!? ;-)
I am not a big fan of tighter coupling between the projects, but that is because it is usually proposed in way that essentially merges them all together. Currently, templates add the linkage, which means that the way the projects are linked together can improved without software changes.

Does a federated search (that returns relevant results from all projects on one page) fit into this proposal, or because of the technical complications deserve it's own proposal? Mathewsanders 03:33, 2 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes it fits fine in this proposal, but can be seperately as well. Romaine 20:08, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Impact?

Some proposals will have massive impact on end-users, including non-editors. Some will have minimal impact. What will be the impact of this proposal on our end-users? -- Philippe 00:14, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am not author of this proposal, but I find it very important.
As to the impact on end-users, I think, search in Wikipedia and Wiktionary should be combined. In general, Wikipedia, Wiktionary and perhaps some other projects should be transparent for end-users. Otherwise, there is some linguistic info on words and idioms in my home Russian Wikipedia. This info should be in Wiktionary, not in Wikipedia, but if it will not be in Wikipedia, it will be lost now for most of end-users.
It was just an example, there can be many others. Kv75 07:59, 8 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Key Questions

  • Why can language-links be created very simple on every project in the left box (if it is the same kind of project) and why isn't that possible for links to different projects in the same language?
Well, it is easy, if the project wants it: on Italian e French language projects, for example: w:it:Template:Interprogetto. Nemo bis 02:03, 20 August 2009
On many projects these tamplates are present but that is insufficient. Ik am fully aware of these templates as I work twith the often. Romaine 18:58, 11 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
